How to make STOVETOP coffee

Equipment and Ingredients

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Heat the Water
Boil water in a kettle and let it cool slightly. Using pre-heated water reduces the time the coffee spends on the stovetop, preventing a burnt taste.

Step 2: Disassemble the Moka Pot
Separate the Moka Pot into its three parts: the base, the filter basket, and the top chamber.

Step 3: Fill the Base with Water
Pour the pre-heated water into the base up to the safety valve. Do not cover the valve.

Step 4: Grind the Coffee:
Grind coffee beans to a medium-fine consistency, similar to table salt. You’ll need enough to fill the filter basket.

Step 5: Add Coffee to the Filter Basket
Fill the filter basket with the ground coffee, leveling it off with a spoon. Do not pack the coffee down, as this can obstruct the flow of water.

Step 6: Assemble the Moka Pot
Place the filter basket into the base and screw the top chamber on tightly. Be careful, as the base will be hot.

Step 7: Heat the Moka Pot
Place the Moka Pot on the stovetop over medium heat. Keep the lid open so you can monitor the brewing process.

Step 8: Brew the Coffee
As the water heats, it will create pressure that forces it up through the coffee grounds and into the top chamber. You’ll hear a hissing sound as coffee begins to fill the chamber.

Step 9: Remove from Heat
Once you hear a gurgling sound, indicating the water is fully expelled, remove the Moka Pot from the heat. Close the lid.

Step 10: Serve the Coffee
Pour the brewed coffee into your mug. Enjoy it as is, or add milk or sugar to taste.

TIPS FOR A GREAT BREW

Avoid Overfilling:
Do not overfill the filter basket or compress the coffee grounds. This can create too much pressure and result in a bitter brew.

Watch the Heat:
Use moderate heat to avoid scorching the coffee. If the coffee starts spouting violently, lower the heat.

Pay Attention to Timing:
The entire process should take about 5 minutes. Longer brewing times can result in over-extraction, leading to a bitter taste.

With these steps and tips, you’re set to master the art of Moka Pot brewing and enjoy a rich, espresso-like coffee at home!
